Babs was my mother-in-law from Waldoboro, ME. She had several beautiful, scrupulously kept gardens, filled with flowers of all kinds. Her husband, my father-in-law, kept a huge vegetable garden and raspberry patch in back of the old farmhouse, looking down towards the Medomak River, with Friendship on the other side. Babs and Paul canned and froze everything from that back garden, and there was rarely a day when there weren’t multiple bouquets of fresh flowers placed strategically throughout the house. I was just transitioning from acrylics to watercolors, when I decided to paint this scene of the kitchen bouquet that particular day. I was fascinated with the exquisite reflections, and spent a long time trying to get them “just right.” I’ve painted and sold many paintings since then, but have never wanted to let this reminder of “the good old days” go. I've been drawing since I was 5 years old and my parents sponsored art shows for my siblings and I. Growing up, I had no TV so my primary form of entertainment was drawing and painting. I won my first art contest in the 4th grade, a cartoon created for a local bank. In grade school I attended drawing and painting classes at Rochester Museum of Art and in my teens I studied art history and Studio Art at Colby College. In 1990 I became interested in watercolor and oil painting, and began working towards an associates degree at the University of New Hampshire.
